Does an AI Chatbot Follow Up With Leads Automatically? How It Actually Works

Capturing a lead is only half the job. A genuinely common pattern is a customer messages once, gets an answer, and then just... goes quiet — not because they lost interest, but because life got in the way and nobody nudged them again. Here's exactly what Chatsettu does about that, and what it honestly doesn't.

What actually happens without follow-up

Your AI employee answers the question and captures the lead the moment someone shows interest — that part happens automatically for every account. But if that customer never replies again and nobody on your team circles back, the lead just sits there. Most small businesses genuinely don't have the time to manually re-message every quiet lead from the last two weeks, so a real number of them get left on the table for no reason other than nobody had a spare minute.

What Follow-Up Automation actually does

It's a paid add-on (₹299/year, 500 email credits included — one credit per email sent) that you turn on from your dashboard, with an explicit consent checkbox each time you enable it. Once it's on, a lead who shared an email address and hasn't been marked as handled automatically gets a short, honest check-in email — by default at day 1, day 3, and day 7 after they first got in touch, worded around your specific industry (an appointment for a clinic, a booking for a hotel, a membership for a gym, and so on). Two extra slots (a value reminder and a booking nudge) exist too, off by default, and every slot's wording, timing, and on/off state can be edited from the Follow-up Automation settings page. You can also pick email, SMS, or both per lead from the Leads page, instead of leaving every lead on the same default channel.

SMS follow-up too, if your business wants it

Email needs nothing extra from you — SMS honestly does. India's TRAI requires every commercial SMS to go through DLT (Distributed Ledger) registration, and that registration has to sit under your own business's GST, not Chatsettu's, so this genuinely can't be a one-click toggle the way email is. You write the exact SMS wording, Chatsettu checks it isn't spammy, then you register that same wording on your own DLT platform (usually a day or two for approval, outside Chatsettu's control) before it can actually go live. Once it is, SMS credits are sold separately from email — ₹149 for 300, ₹299 for 650 — since an SMS has a real per-message cost that email doesn't.

What it deliberately doesn't do

It still never sends anything over WhatsApp — the same honesty that applies everywhere else in Chatsettu applies here too. It only ever follows up with a lead who actually shared the contact info a channel needs (an email address for email, a phone number for SMS), and it stops the moment that lead is marked as handled, so nobody gets nagged after your team has already sorted them out. And it's opt-in by design: nothing gets sent until you've turned it on and confirmed the consent checkbox yourself.

Why the honest version is still worth it

This was never meant to replace your team following up personally on a lead that genuinely matters — it's meant to catch the ones that would otherwise get zero follow-up at all, for the cost of one recovered customer against ₹299 for the whole year.
